Video footage from June shows an 81-year-old driver entering Interstate 93 the wrong way, leading to a fatal crash in Boston.

On June 27, surveillance footage captured Antone Carvalho, of Somerset, taking a wrong turn off the Mass Ave. ramp and entering I-93 in the wrong direction. Shortly thereafter, a family of four swerved their Honda Odyssey to avoid him, resulting in a crash.

Carvalho subsequently collided head-on with a Cruze, killing a man in his 20s from Haverhill, according to Police. Carvalho sustained unspecified injuries and was transported to a local hospital; authorities plan to summon him to court for charges.

This incident marks the second fatal wrong-way crash on Massachusetts roads within three days. On June 24, Sheena Grandpre, 43, of Medway, died after a similar collision on I-290 East in Northborough.

In May, a Massachusetts State Trooper was also killed by a wrong-way driver on Route 1 North. In response, Governor Maura Healey and highway officials recently announced a statewide expansion of a wrong-way driver detection system, a project developed over the past year following several fatal incidents.
