WASHINGTON (7News) — A passenger was killed early Saturday in a two-vehicle crash near the White House, with one driver arrested after fleeing, authorities said.
The crash occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of 17th Street and Constitution Avenue NW, according to the United States Park Police.
Emergency responders reported that a passenger in the second vehicle was ejected during the collision and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of that vehicle was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities said the driver of the suspected vehicle fled on foot but was apprehended shortly after by members of the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division. The suspect was subsequently taken into custody by U.S. Park Police.
The District of Columbia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has taken custody of the deceased. The U.S. Park Police Traffic Safety Unit is conducting the initial investigation and crash reconstruction.
Following consultation with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, the U.S. Park Police will lead the ongoing investigation and charge coordination related to the fatal incident.
