Two arrested after shooting, chase end in State Route 79 crash

LICKING COUNTY, Ohio — Two suspects were arrested Saturday afternoon after a shooting between moving vehicles triggered a high-speed chase across Newark and Heath in Licking County.

According to the Newark Police Department, the incident began just after 1 p.m. near Mt. Vernon Road and State Route 16 when an officer saw a suspect lean from a moving vehicle and fire into another .

Authorities said the officer pursued the suspects for about 9 miles through Newark and Heath toward Hebron via State Route 79.

The pursuit ended when the suspects' vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a wooded area near Enterprise Drive. Both occupants ran into the woods, were located, and taken into custody. Authorities said both were with injuries.

One person in the targeted vehicle was struck by gunfire and transported to Licking Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Police said , including K-9 units and drones. State Route 79 was closed for several hours during the search.

Investigators recovered a firearm from the suspects' vehicle, and Newark Police said the had been reported stolen from Columbus.
