Secret Service detains driver fleeing from deadly crash near the White House.

WASHINGTON (7News) — A passenger was killed in a two-vehicle crash near the White House early Saturday morning.

According to the United States Park Police (USPP), the incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of 17th Street and Constitution Avenue NW.

Authorities reported that the driver of one vehicle fled on foot but was quickly apprehended by the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division and later transferred to USPP custody.

The driver of the second vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. However, a passenger in that vehicle was during the crash and at the scene.

The body was taken by the District of Columbia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The USPP Traffic Safety Unit is conducting the initial investigation and crash reconstruction. After consulting with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, the USPP will lead the ongoing investigation and prosecution related to the fatal incident.

The suspect remains in custody while charges are being finalized. Road closures connected to the crash investigation have been lifted, and all affected roadways are now open.
