HURRICANE, Utah (KUTV) — A 24-year-old man was killed Friday in a chain-reaction crash on State Route 59 near milepost 14 after a speeding driver fled the scene.
Dallin Mangelson, of Washington County, was driving a westbound Chevrolet Malibu when a Chevrolet Avalanche, evading a black passenger car, collided with him. The Avalanche struck Mangelson's vehicle on the driver's side.
Emergency responders airlifted Mangelson to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries, according to authorities.
A motorcyclist, identified as Jared Fredrickson, was critically injured while attempting to avoid the collision during his annual Red Rock Recovery Ride, family members said.
Two additional individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the incident. The driver of the black car involved in the crash remains at large.
The Utah Highway Patrol and Washington County Sheriff's Office are investigating the incident. Anyone with information regarding the black vehicle or its driver is urged to contact authorities.
Mangelson was preparing for his first marathon and was remembered by family as “full of light and joy.”
