MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Authorities on Jan. 8 reported a burglary at Greg Biffle's vacant home, sparking a wide-ranging theft and fraud investigation.
According to the Iredell County Sheriff's Office, more than 40 search warrants focus on a married couple who knew the Biffles; no arrests have been made.
Sheriff Darren Campbell said the pair engaged in extensive planning to obtain money.
Authorities reported $30,000 in cash, two Glock handguns and NASCAR memorabilia were taken from the residence.
According to a search warrant affidavit, a woman spent nearly six hours inside overnight Jan. 7 into Jan. 8 and appeared familiar with cameras, closets and a safe room.
Investigators wrote that a cellphone and multiple devices were active on the property during that time; authorized estate administrators were not present, according to the warrant.
Authorities said license plate readers placed the husband's truck near the home that night and linked the woman to someone who attended Biffle's celebration of life.
According to the warrants, bank, Venmo and PayPal accounts tied to the Biffles were accessed online, contact information was changed to seize control, and funds were moved and used for purchases.
Investigators said at least one fraudulent check tied to Biffle's business was cashed and related activity occurred in multiple states.
Campbell declined to say whether the same couple is being investigated in the financial crimes, citing the ongoing case.
The Dec. 18 plane crash that killed Biffle, his wife and children remains under NTSB investigation.
According to court filings, on April 17 the estates of pilot Dennis Dutton and his son sued Biffle's estate for at least $15 million each.
In February, Biffle's ex-wife filed a notice of claim against Dutton's estate on behalf of their 14-year-old daughter's estate, seeking at least $10 million.
