OAK PARK, Ill. (WBBM/CNN Newsource/WKRC) — A driver died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a chain-reaction crash that injured 14 people on April 3.
Authorities reported that the incident occurred when the driver, identified as 48-year-old Thomas Cremeens, ran a red light while attempting to avoid a pedestrian. The vehicle collided with multiple cars, including a bus, causing injuries to passengers in those vehicles.
According to police, 11 individuals were transported to nearby hospitals, while three others were treated at the scene. None of the injuries were reported as serious.
Witnesses stated that after the crash, a bystander approached Cremeens to check on his condition. As the bystander walked away, a gunshot was heard. Police later confirmed that Cremeens had taken his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Emergency services responded to the scene, leading to temporary lane closures. A full investigation into the incident is ongoing.
