LOUISVILLE, Ky. —
Kiwami Ramen in the Highlands is temporarily closed following a drunk driving incident that damaged the restaurant, according to authorities.
On [date], Alexis Calvillo crashed into the side of the building while four diners, including a pregnant woman who was transported to the hospital, were inside. Repairs are expected to take about a month.
In response, a fundraising pop-up event occurred over the weekend at The StrEatery on West Woodlawn Avenue. The food hall offered Kiwami Ramen's menu, with proceeds assisting employees and repair costs.
Dung Tran, owner of The StrEatery and brother of Kiwami Ramen's co-owners, stated, “It's amazing. It's kind of overwhelming,” emphasizing the community's support.
Witnesses reported seeing extensive damage, including shattered glass. Kathleen Cox, a Highlands resident, expressed concern for local businesses, stating, “I drive by there all the time. It's concerning … I just wanted to show our support.”
Tran expressed gratitude for the turnout at the fundraiser and relief that no serious injuries occurred.
