KAILUA, Hawaii (Island News) — A 16-year-old girl died early Thursday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Pali Highway.
Authorities said Kalena Abelmann was traveling in the Kailua-bound lanes when she lost control of her vehicle, striking a concrete barrier and plummeting approximately 50 feet into a ravine. Her vehicle subsequently crossed the ravine and struck an embankment, igniting into flames.
Witnesses reported that Kalena was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The investigation into whether drugs or alcohol were factors remains ongoing. Emergency responders from the Honolulu Police Department and the Honolulu Fire Department were on the scene to assist.
Friends and family describe Kalena as a compassionate and adventurous spirit, always eager to explore and try new things. “She was never scared to take a risk,” said her friend Avinni Texeira. “Kalena always listened and made sure you felt seen.”
A GoFundMe has been established to assist the family with funeral expenses, highlighting Kalena's love for discovering treasures and serving others. She is survived by her parents and two brothers.
