City Driver Dies After Kalihi Crash

A city bus driver has died from injuries sustained in a crash in Kalihi on Tuesday morning, marking Oahu's 12th traffic fatality of 2026, according to the Honolulu Police Department.

The 59-year-old driver, identified as James Oda, passed away after being in critical condition following the incident around 7:10 a.m. on North Vineyard Boulevard near Pua Lane. He lost control of the westbound bus, crossed into the center median, and crashed into a tree, where the vehicle came to rest. No passengers were on board at the time.

Honolulu Emergency Medical Services treated Oda at the scene and transported him to a nearby hospital. Authorities confirmed that Oda was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and noted that speed, drugs, and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi expressed condolences, stating, “James was part of the backbone of our public transportation system, helping thousands of residents and visitors safely reach their destinations each day.”

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and further updates are expected as details emerge.
