DES MOINES, Iowa — A woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash Friday morning at the intersection of Beaver Avenue and Hickman Road.
The incident occurred just before 7:30 a.m., according to the Des Moines Police Department. A Dodge pickup truck traveling southbound on Beaver Avenue was struck by a Toyota crossover SUV that failed to yield at a red light while heading westbound on Hickman.
A 70-year-old woman, a passenger in the Dodge, was transported to a nearby hospital but later succumbed to her injuries. Authorities have not publicly identified the individuals involved in the crash, and charges are pending review by the Polk County Attorney's Office.
So far this year, 80 individuals have died on Iowa roads, an increase of 13 fatalities compared to the same time in 2022. The Iowa Department of Transportation reports that the five-year average for statewide crash fatalities is 337 annually.
