One dead and three critically injured in head-on crash on I-196 in Kent County.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — One person died and three others sustained critical injuries in a on Interstate 196 Wednesday night.

Authorities say the incident occurred around 8 p.m. near Lake Michigan Drive. A 24-year-old man was driving an eastbound when it crossed the median, colliding with a westbound vehicle.

Four individuals were in the ; one passenger died at the scene, while two others were with critical injuries. A fourth passenger is reported in stable condition.

The westbound vehicle contained three occupants. The 49-year-old male driver was uninjured, whereas a 47-year-old woman in the front seat is in critical condition. A 7-year-old boy in the back seat was transported to the hospital as a precaution.

Westbound lanes of I-196 remain closed as Michigan State Police continue their investigation. The cause of the SUV crossing the median is under review.
