MIDDLETON, Wis. (WKOW) — A 25-year-old woman faces charges after a pedestrian, 68, was fatally struck by her vehicle on Thursday morning.
The incident occurred shortly before 6 a.m. at the intersection of Branch Street and Century Avenue. Authorities report that Tanna Torrez-Centeno, of Middleton, is charged with knowingly operating a motor vehicle without a valid license, resulting in death, a Class H felony.
According to the criminal complaint, police found the victim with a faint pulse and she was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Torrez-Centeno informed officers that she did not possess a driver's license but was in the process of applying for one.
Witnesses stated the vehicle was estimated to be traveling between 30-35 mph as Torrez-Centeno made a left turn from Century Avenue. She reportedly failed to see the victim, who was using a cane, before the collision. The medical examiner later determined that blunt force trauma to the head was the cause of death.
Torrez-Centeno appeared in Dane County Court on Monday, where a $500 signature bond was set. The court ordered no contact with the victim's family and prohibited her from operating a motor vehicle. A preliminary hearing is pending, with a status conference scheduled for June 22.
