HARLEYVILLE, SC — Authorities are investigating a fatal crash that occurred early on April 25 on Interstate 26, involving a 19-year-old ejected from his vehicle.
Lucca Acosta-Navas, of Huger, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Dorchester County Coroner's Office. The incident happened around 4:30 a.m. near mile marker 172, just past the Highway 15 exit to St. George.
Acosta-Navas was driving a 2013 Hyundai sedan eastbound when he struck the rear of an 18-wheeler. The impact caused his vehicle to flip multiple times, ejecting him onto the roadway, according to Master Trooper Hannah Davidson.
Several vehicles subsequently struck Acosta-Navas, and authorities are seeking additional information from witnesses to clarify details surrounding the incident. Cpl. Nick Pye stated they aim to provide Acosta-Navas' family with comprehensive information.
Troopers have not classified the incident as a hit-and-run, as such a designation requires a specific level of knowledge and intent to strike an object in the roadway.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to call the S.C. Highway Patrol at 843-661-4705.
