NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — A fatal pedestrian crash occurred Saturday afternoon on Lower Broadway, involving an 87-year-old driver who ran a red light.
According to Metro Nashville Police, Timothy Wedlock, 58, of Australia, was identified as the victim who died from his injuries shortly after the incident.
The crash took place on August 1 at approximately 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Fourth Avenue North and Broadway, a busy pedestrian area.
Authorities reported that Thomas Cahill, 87, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was driving a 2013 Ford Fusion south on Fourth Avenue when he struck four pedestrians legally crossing Broadway.
A 44-year-old man from Jacksonville, Florida, remains in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. A 21-year-old woman from Knoxville sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while a 58-year-old woman from Parsons, Tennessee, is reported in critical but stable condition.
Metro Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Cahill's actions prior to the crash, noting that he did not exhibit signs of impairment. Cahill and his 90-year-old wife, a passenger, were both hospitalized with minor injuries.
The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been announced as of yet. Police are assessing whether Cahill may have experienced a medical emergency.
In response to the incident, discussions have emerged about traffic regulations on Lower Broadway, which may be subject to closure during peak pedestrian times.
