NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — An accident on Lower Broadway claimed the life of an Australian man after an 87-year-old Kentucky driver ran a red light on August 1.
Metro Nashville Police identified the victim as Timothy Wedlock, 58. The crash occurred shortly after 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Fourth Avenue North and Broadway, a heavily trafficked area.
Authorities said Thomas Cahill, 87, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was driving a 2013 Ford Fusion south on Fourth Avenue when he failed to stop at the red light, striking four pedestrians crossing legally. Wedlock succumbed to his injuries.
A 44-year-old man from Jacksonville, Florida, is reported in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. A 21-year-old woman from Knoxville has non-life-threatening injuries, while a 58-year-old woman from Parsons, Tennessee, is in critical but stable condition.
Investigators are examining the cause of the crash and whether Cahill may have experienced a medical emergency. Cahill and his 90-year-old wife, a passenger, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Police reported no signs of impairment.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene where bystanders provided immediate aid. Witnesses reported attempts at CPR for victims.
The investigation is ongoing, with no charges announced as authorities consider ongoing safety measures for Lower Broadway, a popular entertainment district.
