Fatal Firetruck Accident in Yellow Medicine County Under Investigation

COTTONWOOD, MN — A firetruck accident in Yellow Medicine County on September 26 has resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, authorities reported.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., a Wood Lake firetruck traveling north on 490th Street veered off the roadway and struck a mailbox. The vehicle subsequently overcorrected, rolling several times before landing in the westbound ditch.

Retired firefighter Patrick Steven Remiger, 43, was at the scene after being found underneath the overturned truck. A 6-year-old boy sustained serious injuries, and the 37-year-old driver was with serious injuries.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, alcohol was not a factor in the crash, although all three occupants were unbelted. Investigators did recover multiple Keystone Light cans near the scene.

Authorities confirmed that the firetruck and its occupants had been participating in Lakeview homecoming festivities prior to the incident.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities looking into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
