HOMER MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED IN ANCHOR POINT CAR CRASH
A car crash in Anchor Point on Monday afternoon left a Homer man with life-threatening injuries.
According to Alaska State Troopers, Mark Shufelt, 51, was driving south on the Sterling Highway at approximately 4:10 p.m. when his 1998 Toyota Tacoma truck collided with a 2005 Ford Taurus driven by Donald Krech, 56, of Ninilchik.
Both vehicles veered off the highway and rolled multiple times. Shufelt, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from his truck. Krech and his passenger, Timothy Johnson, 54, also of Ninilchik, were secured with seatbelts and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency responders transported all three men to South Peninsula Hospital.
Shufelt was stabilized before being medevaced to an Anchorage hospital, where he is currently listed in serious condition. The Sterling Highway was temporarily closed for about 20 minutes to facilitate emergency response.
Authorities reported that road conditions were good at the time, with clear skies and no ice or snow present. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Blood samples were taken from both drivers for toxicology testing.
Troopers withheld Shufelt's name until family members were notified due to the severity of his injuries.
