A 65-year-old Ninilchik man, Denver Hammons, died in a single-vehicle crash on Christmas Day on the Sterling Highway near Happy Valley. The accident occurred at approximately 1:27 p.m., according to Alaska State Troopers.
Troopers responded to a 911 call reporting a rollover at Mile 142. Upon arrival, they found Hammons unconscious and not breathing outside his 1996 Nissan Pathfinder. Despite the efforts of Ninilchik Emergency Medical Services, he was declared dead at the scene.
Authorities reported that Hammons was driving north when he crossed the centerline, overcorrected, and lost control of the vehicle before it flipped. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the car. There were no other occupants or vehicles involved in the incident.
Next of kin have been notified, and authorities do not believe alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.
