SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — A sergeant with the Utah Department of Corrections died in a crash on Sunday morning.

At 7:25 a.m., Salt Lake City Police Department officers responded to a accident near 700 N 8000 W. The vehicle left the roadway and rolled multiple times, resulting in the driver being .

The victim, identified as Robert Hill, 62, was at the scene. Authorities confirmed there were no other vehicles involved in the crash.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Police believe Hill lost control of the vehicle while traveling south on 8000 West.

UDC officials stated that Hill had served with the department since 1996, holding various roles, including duties at the maximum security unit in Draper and recently in Enforcement at the Utah State Correctional Facility.

Jared Garcia, UDC executive director, expressed condolences, saying, “The passing of Sgt. Hill is a profound loss for our department and for our entire law enforcement community.” UDC is providing support to staff members during this tragic time.
