WASHINGTON (7News) — A two-vehicle crash near the White House early Saturday left one passenger dead and resulted in the arrest of a fleeing driver, according to the United States Park Police.

The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. at the intersection of 17th Street and Constitution Avenue NW, police reported.

Authorities reported that the driver of the suspected vehicle fled the scene on foot but was quickly apprehended by the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division and later transferred to the custody of the U.S. Park Police.

The driver of the second vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital. However, a passenger from that vehicle was during the collision and at the scene. The body was subsequently taken by the District of Columbia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The U.S. Park Police Traffic Safety Unit conducted the initial investigation and crash reconstruction on-site. Following discussions with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia, the agency has taken over the investigation and the related arrest.

The suspect remains in custody while charges are being coordinated with the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Road closures linked to the investigation have been lifted, and all affected roadways have reopened. The investigation is ongoing.
