MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA, MA — Two people were Sunday after a serious crash on Route 128 south, involving two vehicles.

At approximately 4:45 p.m., police received multiple 911 calls reporting the incident between Exits 50 and 49 (School and Pine streets), prompting a significant emergency response, according to the Manchester Fire Department.

Fire crews arrived to extinguish both a and gasoline fire resulting from the crash. One person sustained serious injuries and burns and was transported to Beverly Hospital in serious condition. A second individual was also taken to the same hospital for evaluation of minor injuries.

Route 128 South was closed during the emergency response but has since reopened following the removal of the vehicles and control of the fire.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash, and an investigation is ongoing. The Manchester Fire Department expressed gratitude to the mutual aid agencies for their coordinated efforts in managing the incident.
