STAFORD, VA (October 6, 2023) — A bus crash on southbound I-95 early Friday morning left five dead, including a Massachusetts family, and 44 others injured.
Authorities said the crash occurred at approximately 2:41 a.m. when a bus collided with several vehicles, including a Chevrolet Suburban that was pushed into an Acura SUV. Both vehicles caught fire, resulting in multiple fatalities.
The deceased from the Acura have been identified as Dimitri Doncev (45), Ecaterina Doncev (44), and their children, Emily (13) and Mark Doncev (7). A 25-year-old woman from Worcester, Massachusetts, who was in the Suburban, also did not survive.
Witnesses reported that the family was en route to a wedding in South Carolina. Emergency crews transported 44 victims to local hospitals; as of Saturday, 14 patients have been discharged, while five remain hospitalized in varying conditions at Mary Washington Healthcare.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the crash and plans to hold a press conference at 3 p.m. Saturday in Stafford.
