GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — A 1-year-old boy is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a vehicle plunged into a pond in Grand Traverse County on Monday.
The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office reported that the vehicle, driven by a 27-year-old Acme Township resident, left Bunker Hill Road, veered through a field, and entered the pond on the north side of the roadway. The driver was extracted from the vehicle before firefighters located the child in the back seat.
Emergency responders, including two Grand Traverse Metro Fire firefighters and a member of the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Dive Team, retrieved the boy from the submerged vehicle. He was initially taken to Munson Medical Center and subsequently transferred to DeVos Children's Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also transported to Munson Medical Center. Additionally, two deputies from the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office received treatment for minor injuries from glass, while two firefighters sustained cuts and scrapes during the rescue efforts.
Authorities confirmed that the crash is still under investigation.
