WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (KUTV) — A rollover crash involving nine Cyprus High School students resulted in the death of a 15-year-old girl Tuesday morning.
According to West Valley City Police, the incident occurred near 4100 S. 8400 W. at approximately 11 a.m. The group was traveling in a single vehicle when the crash took place.
Authorities confirmed the girl was ejected from the vehicle and appeared not to be wearing a seat belt. Four other students, including the 16-year-old driver, were transported to the hospital. The driver has since been released.
The crash involved one vehicle, with all nine students—mostly boys aged 15 to 17—inside. Authorities indicated that speed may have been a contributing factor, noting the uneven surface of the dirt road.
Mae Foa, a spokesperson for Granite School District, reported that a crisis team is at the school to assist staff and students following the incident. She emphasized that open lunch periods allow students to leave campus, a policy that may be reconsidered in light of the tragedy.
Mayor Mick Sudbury of Magna issued a statement expressing condolences to the victim's family and support for those injured. “This tragedy has deeply impacted our entire community,” he said.
There is no ongoing investigation reported, and further details regarding road conditions and potential preventive measures have not been disclosed.
