STUART, Fla. — A family in Stuart is seeking justice after their mother was severely injured in a head-on collision with a suspected drunk driver in November.
Rebecca Engle, a registered nurse, was struck while returning home from a local Target. Her son witnessed the aftermath of the accident.
Authorities reported that the other driver was traveling the wrong way and showed signs of intoxication. Engle recounted, “He had to know he was too drunk; he was driving on the wrong side of the road.”
Despite her dedication to nursing, now a passion for Engle, she faces a lengthy recovery. The State Attorney's Office has not yet filed charges against the driver. According to State Attorney Thomas Bakkedahl, the delay stems from an affidavit being submitted to the wrong office by the Florida Highway Patrol.
This error has postponed legal proceedings for nearly three months, leaving Engle's family in a difficult situation. “I've been by her side this whole time,” said her husband, Kevin Engle. “I plan on being by her side the rest of this time.”
The Engle family has initiated a lawsuit against the suspected driver and created a GoFundMe account to aid in their ongoing medical expenses.
