MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. — Deputies rescued two individuals from their submerged vehicle after a crash into a water-filled embankment on Martin Highway Friday night.
According to the Martin County Sheriff's Office, the victims' car was struck by another vehicle while traveling eastbound on Martin Highway, causing it to leave the roadway and plunge into a deep embankment.
The occupants managed to call 911 but lost connection before providing their exact location. Deputies Matt Fritchie and Juan Pepper-Orelliana were directed to the general area but could not see the vehicle from the road.
Fritchie rolled down his window and used the sound of a car horn to locate the submerged vehicle. Both deputies then entered the water, broke into the vehicle, and brought the victims to safety. They were subsequently transported to the hospital for injuries.
The Sheriff's Office is actively investigating the incident and is working to locate the vehicle that struck the victims and left the scene.
“This incident is a testament to our dedicated deputies and dispatchers working swiftly to save lives,” the Sheriff's Office stated.
