STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. (7News) — Federal investigators are probing a multi-vehicle crash that killed five and injured dozens on Interstate 95 in Stafford County early Friday morning.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:35 a.m. on May 29, on I-95 southbound near mile marker 146, about two miles south of the Quantico exit, involving a charter bus and at least seven other vehicles.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating alongside the Virginia State Police (VSP). A preliminary report is expected within 30 days.
Details of the Incident
According to VSP, approximately 34 people were aboard the bus. Among the deceased were four occupants of the Acura, identified as a 45-year-old male, a 44-year-old female, a 13-year-old female, and a 7-year-old male from Greenfield, Mass. The fifth victim, 25-year-old Priscilla R. Mafalda from Worcester, Mass., was in the struck Suburban.
Forty-four individuals were hospitalized, three critically. In a statement, Providence Christian Academy expressed condolences for the families involved.
The bus driver, Jing Sheng Dong, 48, from Staten Island, N.Y., suffered injuries and has been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter. He is currently hospitalized and held without bond.
Investigation and Response
NTSB officials stated that their investigation will examine driver actions, vehicle conditions, and the design of the work zone. Authorities are also seeking video evidence and eyewitness accounts.
Mary Washington Healthcare reported receiving 19 patients, with 15 released and four remaining hospitalized as of Saturday afternoon.
