ALDSWORTH, England (WKRC) — A 21-year-old woman has had her prison sentence increased to nine years and three months for a high-speed crash that killed two people.
Liberty Mitchell, of Chipping Norton, had her original sentence of six years and eight months extended following a referral by the U.K. Attorney General to the Court of Appeal.
According to the Attorney General's Office, the incident occurred on Dec. 2, 2022, when Mitchell drove toward Aldsworth. She attempted to overtake three vehicles on the wrong side of the road at nearly 100 mph in a 60 mph zone, colliding with a taxi and causing a multi-vehicle crash.
Taxi driver Octavian Codreanu was pronounced dead at the scene, while passenger Moyra Whelan later died at a hospital. Six others sustained injuries, three of which were serious.
Investigators discovered videos on Mitchell's social media showing her reckless driving at speeds of 100 mph and crossing into oncoming traffic. Authorities noted she was driving between cleaning jobs and lacked insurance coverage for business use.
Mitchell pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, two counts for driving uninsured, and three counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. In addition to her prison sentence, she received an eight-year and four-month driving disqualification, with an extended driving test required for license restoration.
Attorney General Ellie Reeves stated that Mitchell's “reckless actions behind the wheel claimed the lives of two people and left many others with life-changing injuries.”
