HAMPTON, Va. — A two-year-old child died following a multi-vehicle crash on I-64 last Wednesday evening, Virginia State Police reported.
The incident occurred around 8:35 p.m. on I-64 westbound near the I-664 interchange. According to VSP, a 2011 Toyota Sienna was rear-ended by a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze driven by Victor Martin Mendez, 39, who has since been charged with following too closely. The impact caused the Sienna to spin and hit a 2004 Honda Accord before colliding with the jersey wall.
The two-year-old passenger in the Sienna was transported to the hospital, where the child later succumbed to injuries. The child was properly secured in a car seat at the time of the crash. Another passenger in the Sienna sustained serious injuries, while the driver received minor injuries. The driver of the Accord and Mendez were uninjured.
Virginia State Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
