Eugene, OR – June 12, 2026, 10:35 a.m. PT – A crash involving a vehicle that tumbled down a hill and damaged a propane tank prompted an emergency response on June 11.
Eugene Springfield Fire responded to the incident near Spencer Butte shortly before 3 p.m. after receiving an alert from a smart watch worn by the driver, indicating a crash. Upon arrival, first responders found an overturned vehicle on a steep embankment, with the driver trapped inside.
Firefighters spent a significant amount of time extricating the sole occupant, who was later transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The vehicle was reported as a total loss.
According to Fire Chief Mike Caven, the incident presented multiple challenges due to its location and the potential for wildfire. “This incident had all the hallmark components used in command promotional testing scenarios at ESF,” Caven said, highlighting the complexity of the situation, which included a leaking propane tank and high voltage power lines nearby.
Five fire crews, one medic unit, and two chief officers were dispatched to stabilize the scene and address these hazards. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, with no further details released at this time.
