OAK PARK, Ill. (April 3, 2023) – A driver fatally shot himself following a chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles that injured 14 people.
Authorities stated the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. when the driver, identified as 48-year-old Thomas Cremeens, ran a red light while swerving to avoid a pedestrian. The collision involved at least five vehicles, including a bus.
According to police, 11 individuals were transported to local hospitals, while three others received treatment at the scene. Fortunately, none of the injuries were life-threatening.
Witnesses reported that after the crash, a bystander approached Cremeens' vehicle to check on his condition. Shortly after, a gunshot was heard, leading authorities to confirm that Cremeens died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The incident is currently under investigation by local law enforcement. Lane closures were implemented on the affected streets during the response and investigation.
