CHARLESTON, SC – October 5, 2023 — A multi-vehicle accident caused significant delays during rush hour on the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge.
According to the Charleston Police Department, the crash occurred around 5:12 p.m. involving three vehicles traveling eastbound on the bridge. Emergency responders confirmed that four individuals sustained injuries; however, none are believed to be life-threatening.
Authorities closed two eastbound lanes for approximately 45 minutes to facilitate medical aid and vehicle removal. Towing services were on the scene to clear the wreckage, and traffic was diverted via the nearby exit.
Witnesses reported heavy congestion extending back to the Calhoun Street Flyover as backups continued during the evening commute. An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway, with no further details released.
