JOHNS ISLAND, SC – A 31-year-old man died following a car crash on Main Road on Sunday.
Jose Luis Guzman Martinez succumbed to his injuries at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 13, after a collision at Main Road and Beeblossom Court. The Charleston County Sheriff's Office closed the roadway for several hours for investigation.
Authorities arrested 36-year-old Alvaro Hernandez Bautista in connection with the crash. He faces charges including felony DUI resulting in death and multiple counts of hit-and-run. His detention is flagged by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to jail records.
The crash involved a single vehicle traveling east on Main Road, which reportedly entered the opposite lane, overcorrected, and struck a tree. Guzman Martinez, seated as a passenger, died at the scene. Hernandez Bautista allegedly fled but was later apprehended.
Three additional passengers were taken to the Medical University of South Carolina for treatment of injuries. The investigation is ongoing, with further details to be released as the situation develops.
