Lao New Year Parade Incident in Iberia Parish Leaves 18 Injured, One Arrested

IBERIA PARISH, La. — An unexpected incident during the Lao New Year festival on April 8 injured at least 18 people after a vehicle drove into a crowded parade route.

Authorities said Todd Landry, 57, of Jeanerette, drove his blue muscle into the parade participants near the intersection of Savannakhet Street and Melancon Road around 2:30 p.m. Witnesses reported that the vehicle overturned a golf cart and struck several attendees. Landry showed signs of impairment, with a blood-alcohol level of 0.137%, and was subsequently arrested on multiple charges, including driving while impaired and first-degree negligent injuring.

Emergency response teams mobilized shortly after the incident, with initial calls for assistance received at 2:40 p.m. Acadian Ambulance dispatched seven ambulances and one helicopter, eventually increasing the response to 14 ambulances and two helicopters. Authorities coordinated with local fire departments and law enforcement agencies.

According to Louisiana State Police, 18 individuals were injured in the incident. Seven patients were transported to Ochsner Lafayette General, three of whom were treated and released. Four remained .

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as bystanders attempted to help the injured. Eyewitnesses reported children were also among those affected, amplifying the overall distress of those present.

In the aftermath, festival organizers canceled parts of the Saturday events and ceased alcohol sales. Security concerns have since been raised regarding the adequacy of measures in place during the parade.

As of Tuesday, Landry remained in the Iberia Parish Jail, with a bond set at $247,500.
