DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. (CBS12) — A fatal crash at a Daytona Beach Shores toll booth on June 1 has raised concerns over impaired driving, as a suspect has been taken into custody.

Authorities reported that 911 calls about a suspected drunk driver began shortly before the crash, involving a pickup truck driven erratically on Peninsula Drive. Witnesses indicated the truck nearly collided with multiple vehicles.

According to the Volusia Sheriff's Office, 35-year-old Deanna Harrell is suspected of having consumed alcohol prior to the incident. Sheriff Mike Chitwood stated that Harrell exhibited dangerous driving behaviors, including swerving and nearly hitting objects.

At approximately 12:38 p.m., the crash occurred as 63-year-old toll booth worker Tammy Jo Baker entered her booth. Emergency Medical Technicians arrived at the scene within minutes, but Baker was shortly thereafter.

Body camera footage from deputies shows first responders assisting Baker and locating Harrell, who had fled south on the beach after the crash. Signs of intoxication were evident, including a strong odor of alcohol. Harrell was placed under the Baker Act for evaluation due to self-harm threats.

On June 7, Harrell was arrested on charges of vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter related to Baker's death. The investigation continues, with Sheriff Chitwood emphasizing the commitment to justice for Baker's family.

Baker's family is mourning her loss, recalling her as a devoted matriarch. Local officials are urging increased caution in the beachside area, where and vehicle interactions necessitate vigilant driving.
