LOWELL TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A single-vehicle crash on westbound I-96 in Lowell Township resulted in the death of a 19-month-old passenger on April 28, 2026.
Michigan State Police (MSP) responded to the scene near Alden Nash Avenue around 2:41 p.m. According to authorities, the vehicle was driven by a 41-year-old woman from Lansing, who was reportedly traveling erratically at high speeds prior to the incident.
The vehicle veered from the median side of the roadway onto the shoulder and struck a cluster of trees. First responders found the child with severe injuries and immediately performed lifesaving measures, including CPR. The child was transported to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The driver sustained minor injuries and is expected to survive.
The investigation is ongoing, pending a toxicology report. MSP officials stated that charges may be pursued at a later date. I-96 was closed during the investigation and reopened approximately 90 minutes later.
