One dead, one seriously injured in Boone County crash

BURLINGTON, Ky. — A crash on East Bend Road resulted in one fatality and left a woman seriously injured early Tuesday morning, Sept. 26.

According to Boone County Sheriff's Office spokesman Major Philip Ridgell, 48-year-old Matthew Combs was at the scene around 4:01 a.m. He was driving a 2009 Ford Focus westbound when he failed to navigate a righthand curve, crossing into the opposite lane and exiting the roadway on the left side. The vehicle hit a tree, causing it to flip onto its right side and obstruct both lanes of traffic.

Emergency crews from Burlington Fire and EMS responded to the scene. They had to extricate a 44-year-old female passenger from the vehicle. She was subsequently transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with potentially life-threatening injuries, according to authorities.

The Boone County Sheriff's Office Accident Reconstruction Unit is conducting an investigation into the incident.
