OVER 2.5 MILLION SIGN PETITION FOR LENIENCY IN FATAL TURNPIKE CRASH
FORT PIERCE, Fla. — A petition exceeding 2.5 million signatures calls for leniency toward an undocumented migrant truck driver involved in a crash that killed three people on the Florida Turnpike.
On August 14, 2025, Harjinder Singh, 28, was driving a 2024 International semi-tractor-trailer near mile marker 171 when he made an illegal U-turn in an “official use only” area, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. His trailer crossed multiple lanes, colliding with a 2015 Chrysler Town & Country minivan, resulting in the deaths of all three passengers.
Authorities charged Singh with three counts of vehicular homicide, later adding three counts of manslaughter during a court appearance following his extradition from California.
The Collective Punjabi Youth initiated the petition to Governor Ron DeSantis, arguing that Singh's actions were not intentional and citing his lack of prior record. They advocate for alternative sentencing options, such as restorative justice.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles confirmed Singh's actions blocked highway lanes, leading to the fatal incident. Executive Director Dave Kerner stated the collision resulted from reckless behavior.
St. Lucie County Sheriff Richard Del Toro criticized Singh's lack of remorse and failure to check on victims. Investigators revealed Singh entered the U.S. illegally in 2018 and later obtained a commercial driver's license.
Singh faces immigration violations and will be deported upon resolution of state charges. The Florida Highway Patrol underscored its commitment to upholding both state and federal laws to ensure public safety.
