HANAMAULU, Hawaii (Island News) — A 58-year-old man sustained life-threatening injuries after being struck by a on Kuhio Highway late Friday night.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:45 p.m. on June 19, near the Laukona Street intersection. According to Kauai Police, the was walking westbound along the eastbound shoulder when he attempted to cross the highway and was hit by a 2008 driven by a 77-year-old man from Kapaa.

Emergency responders transported the victim to Wilcox Medical Center, where he was initially reported in critical but stable condition before being to The Queen's Medical Center in Oahu due to his injuries.

Authorities do not suspect speed as a contributing factor in the collision, and toxicology results are pending to determine if alcohol or drugs were involved.

Kuhio Highway was closed for approximately two and a half hours while police investigated the scene, with traffic rerouted through nearby residential streets.
