Man Struck Twice on South Wilmington Street Bridge in Fatal Incident
RALEIGH, NC — A 59-year-old man was fatally injured after being struck by multiple vehicles while walking on the South Wilmington Street bridge on October 1, 2023.
Authorities reported that the man was initially hit around 2:41 p.m. as he traversed the bridge. Following the impact, he fell over the bridge and was subsequently struck again by a second vehicle traveling in the same direction.
Emergency responders from the RALEIGH FIRE DEPARTMENT and the RALEIGH POLICE DEPARTMENT arrived on the scene shortly after the incident was reported. Despite life-saving measures, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing. Authorities have not identified the drivers involved, nor have they reported any injuries to them.
As a result of the incident, both lanes of South Wilmington Street were temporarily closed for several hours while the investigation and cleanup were conducted.
