CORSICA, S.D. — Two people were killed and two others injured in a single-vehicle crash Sunday evening near Corsica.
According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred at approximately 5:57 p.m. on April 19. Carey Jay Utterback, 52, of Mitchell, was driving a 2016 Ford Fusion eastbound on S.D. Highway 44 near mile marker 325 when he lost control, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and enter the south ditch. The vehicle struck a field approach, vaulted over a fence, and rolled before coming to rest in a field.
Utterback and passenger Peggy Lynn Iverson, 72, of Sioux Falls, were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other passengers, 37-year-old Bethanie Lynn Iverson and 36-year-old Benjamin Lyle Iverson, both of Sioux Falls, were life-flighted to a Sioux Falls hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities confirmed that Utterback was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, while Bethanie and Benjamin Iverson were not. The seat belt use by Peggy Iverson is still under investigation.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is conducting the investigation. All information released thus far is preliminary.
