Kona Pedestrian Killed in Collision with Suspected DUI Driver.

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii — A has died following a collision with a pickup truck on the Old Kona Airport roadway on May 30, Hawaii Police reported.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:28 p.m. when a white 2017 Tacoma, traveling south, veered off the roadway into an unfinished gravel area, striking a man walking in that section. Emergency responders from the Hawaii Fire Department transported the victim to Kona Community Hospital before airlifting him to The Queen's Medical Center on Oahu. Hospital officials later confirmed the man's death on June 1, and his identity is pending notification of next of kin. An autopsy has been ordered.

The driver, 23-year-old Janne Labin of Kailua-Kona, was arrested at the scene. Following consultation with the Hawaii County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, Labin has been charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, first-degree negligent injury, and . Police indicated that Labin's bail was set at $13,000, which he posted after a court appearance on June 2.

Authorities have reclassified the case as second-degree negligent homicide due to the victim's death, with potential for additional charges as the investigation continues. Preliminary findings suggest speed, alcohol, and inattention were contributing factors.
