MADISON (WKOW) — A school was struck by a dump truck that ran a red light on S. Park St. from eastbound Beltline, sending five children to the hospital with minor injuries on Wednesday.

Authorities confirmed that two additional students received medical care at the scene. The dump truck driver, a 77-year-old man, was unharmed and cited for a red light violation.

A total of 29 students were transported from the scene to Lincoln Elementary School, where they were reunited with their families, although the students are enrolled at Midvale Elementary School.

Madison Police Chief John Patterson described the situation as traumatic for families, remarking, “We had a lot of kids that were very upset, in addition to the ones that were hurt.” Authorities noted that luck may have contributed to avoiding more severe injuries.

Madison Metropolitan School District Superintendent Dr. Joe Gothard expressed commitment to supporting those impacted, stating, “We have an excellent school leader and a school community and volunteers that will wrap their arms around the school community.”

The scene was cleared, and traffic resumed normal flow shortly after the incident. An investigation is ongoing.
