Fatal Crash Claims Lives of UCC Softball Team Members
DOUGLAS, COOS COUNTY, Ore. — A two-vehicle crash on April 18 resulted in the deaths of two Umpqua Community College softball team members and left several others injured.
The incident occurred at the junction of Powers Highway and Highway 42 at milepost 23. A Chevy Silverado merged into oncoming traffic and collided with a bus carrying the UCC softball team heading eastbound on Highway 42.
According to Oregon State Police, Kiley Nevaeh Jones, 19, a passenger on the bus, and her driver, Jami Lea Strinz, 46, suffered fatal injuries. Eight other occupants of the bus were hospitalized with serious injuries. The driver of the Silverado, Johnathan James Dowdy, 32, of Coos Bay, was also taken to the hospital due to severe injuries.
Authorities confirmed that the collision is under criminal investigation. UCC President Dr. Rachel Pokrandt stated the focus is on providing support to affected students and staff.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with numerous emergency vehicles present. Freshman player Haven Frable, who suffered a concussion and broken bones, reported that her teammates were traumatized following the incident.
Community members have initiated fundraising efforts to support the families and the team during this difficult time. As of April 20, two members of the team remain hospitalized.
