ASHLAND, Ore. — Two 17-year-old students from Ashland High School were killed in a car accident early Sunday morning, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office.
The crash occurred on February 22 in the 1350 block of East Nevada Street. A 17-year-old driver lost control of an Audi A6, striking a tree; the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Emergency crews from Jackson County Fire District 5 and Ashland Fire & Rescue extricated four passengers, also 17 years old. One passenger died shortly after being transported to a local hospital; the other three remain hospitalized in stable condition with critical injuries.
The Ashland School District has initiated grief counseling for students and staff. Superintendent Dr. Joseph Hattrick emphasized community support during this difficult time, stating, “All of the school districts in Jackson and Josephine County have offered support.”
A memorial has been established at the crash site, featuring flowers and cards. Another memorial in the school quad includes a heart made of flowers, where students can write messages in chalk.
The investigation, led by the Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) Team, indicates the vehicle was speeding eastbound on East Nevada Street before losing control near a sharp curve.
The JCSO has extended condolences to the families affected and requests respect for their privacy.
