FALL RIVER, MA — A Fall River man was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for a crash that killed a 24-year-old nurse on September 15, 2024.

Andrew Sousa, 28, pleaded guilty Friday in Fall River Superior Court to motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence. A second charge was dropped as part of the plea agreement.

The crash occurred just before 1:30 a.m. on Route 44 in Taunton, when Sousa, driving a gray 2015 Infiniti eastbound near 608 Winthrop St., rear-ended a tractor trailer. Mallory Humphreys, a passenger in the vehicle, sustained injuries and was at the scene.

Humphreys' family expressed disappointment with the sentence, arguing it does not adequately reflect their loss. “It was significantly less than we expected, and they dropped one of the charges, which was very disappointing,” said Kelsey, Humphreys' sister.

Humphreys was a dedicated nurse inspired by her own childhood hospital experiences. Family members described her as a vibrant, caring individual who left a profound impact on those around her.

Despite the outcome of the hearing, her family remains committed to honoring her legacy, with Kelsey intending to write a memoir about their lives together.

The Massachusetts State Police are continuing their investigation into the crash.
