CLEVELAND — On June 5, 2026, the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland said a teacher's contract was not renewed after a Netflix appearance.

According to the Diocese, Mary Queen of Peace School art and digital media teacher Steve Shirilla will not return to employment there.

Following the May premiere of “The Crash,” the Diocese placed Shirilla on administrative leave, authorities said.

At the time, the school told parents it was investigating allegations of poor judgment by a teacher.

Shirilla told TMZ he would not re-sign with the school based on how the matter was handled.

“The Crash” centers on the case of Shirilla's daughter, MacKenzie, stemming from a July 2022 Strongsville crash that killed Dominic Russo, 20, and Davion Flanagan, 19.

Prosecutors said MacKenzie, then 17, intentionally drove into a building at about 100 mph without braking; her family has maintained she suffered a medical emergency.

A Cuyahoga County judge found her guilty of murder and other charges; she is serving life in prison with parole eligibility after at least 15 years.
