HAMPTON, Va. (WKRC) — A DUI crash on I-64 early Monday resulted in the death of a 1-year-old boy, according to Virginia State Police.
At approximately 2:41 a.m., a 14-year-old girl, identified as the mother of the child, was driving under the influence when she veered off the roadway, struck a guardrail, and subsequently collided with a lane barrier. The child, Ma'Khai, was reportedly not properly restrained and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to a hospital, where he died on Thursday.
Both the driver and the child were not wearing seat belts at the time of the incident. The girl was also hospitalized for her injuries.
The child's grandmother expressed her grief, emphasizing a lack of anger towards the driver, despite the tragic circumstances.
Authorities confirmed that the 14-year-old is facing charges including driving under the influence, driving without a license, and a child restraint violation. Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
Family members noted that Ma'Khai would have celebrated his second birthday on April 4.
