PENNSYLVANIA (WHP) — On September 11, 2023, communities marked the 25th anniversary of the Flight 93 crash in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
At approximately 10:03 a.m. on that day in 2001, Flight 93 was forced down by passengers fighting back against four hijackers, who intended to target a federal building in Washington, D.C. All 40 passengers and crew members aboard the flight, as well as the hijackers, were killed.
Emergency response included multiple agencies, with the American Red Cross and Salvation Army providing aid in the aftermath. A grief counselor with the Red Cross, Patti Anewalt, arrived on September 12, 2001, to support grieving families and emergency workers. She spent two weeks in the area, assisting in the recovery efforts.
Anewalt recalled the organization's work at the crash site, where markings indicated the discovery of evidence. Families were transported to the site for closure, with many attending memorial services organized by the community.
In remembrance, Anewalt emphasized the importance of discussing the events of 9/11 with children, clarifying misconceptions and providing context about media coverage. She noted, “We learn how to live with loss,” highlighting the ongoing nature of grief.
Authorities also engaged in memorial activities throughout the day, emphasizing the legacy of heroism displayed by Flight 93's passengers and crew.
